I got inspired to go to Cape Campbell when I was searching for some places to go near Blenheim where Stephen’s parents live. Cape Campbell came up on the search and I do love lighthouses đ Fun fact, this was the lighthouse in the 2016 movie “A Light Between Oceans.” I have yet to watch it, but Mom and Dad say its a good one – let me know what you think.
So Cape Campbell…the DOC guide suggests that the track is only accessible during low tide and is an 8 hour return trip, so we left time accordingly. Stephen, myself and his parents turned up and started our walk along the beach. A few months prior, New Zealand had experienced a major earthquake which had its centre near Cape Campbell. Walking along the beach, it was visible where the sea level had risen during the earthquake – though the dried out kelp made for a few sections of stinky beach.
The “8 hour walk” continued along the beach where we turned the corner and saw the lighthouse we were walking towards in the distance. It took us only about 1.5 hours to reach the lighthouse. It was actually quite striking, black and white against the pale sky. You aren’t allowed to walk up to or inside the lighthouse so we stared at a distance, careful to mind the seals and sea lions on the rocks behind us.
The walk back took slightly longer and had a lot of laughs đ but the wind was mostly in our favour. All in all it was a good day and pretty fun!
